MP Andrea Purkiss joined fellow opposition members in calling out alleged victimisation in the government's ROOFS housing programme, demanding that Hanover Eastern residents receive fair and equal access.
Access to safe, affordable housing is one of the most pressing needs across rural Jamaica — and Hanover Eastern is no exception. When the government launched the ROOFS programme to address housing needs, MP Andrea Purkiss welcomed the initiative in principle.
However, as the programme rolled out, concerns emerged that benefits were being distributed along political lines — with communities and individuals perceived as opposition supporters being passed over or deprioritised.
In April 2026, MP Purkiss joined other opposition members of Parliament in publicly challenging the administration of the programme. She called on the government to publish transparent criteria for how ROOFS allocations are made and to open the process to independent scrutiny.
"Housing is not a political reward. Every Jamaican family that qualifies for this programme deserves to be considered on equal terms — regardless of how they voted or where they live," she said.
MP Purkiss has committed to continuing to monitor the programme's rollout in Hanover Eastern and to raising individual constituency cases with the relevant ministries where residents have been unfairly excluded.
Residents who believe they have been overlooked by the ROOFS programme are encouraged to contact the constituency office for assistance.
