Road Rehabilitation Works Begin on Lucea Main Road Corridor

Long-awaited road rehabilitation works have officially begun on the Lucea main road corridor, bringing relief to thousands of commuters and residents in East Hanover.

After years of community advocacy, the Lucea main road corridor has finally entered the active rehabilitation phase. Construction crews began work this week on the most severely damaged sections of the route, which serves as the primary artery for residents travelling between communities in East Hanover and the parish capital.

MP Andrea Purkiss was on site to mark the start of works. "This is what happens when you keep pushing, when you keep speaking up. The road was a source of daily hardship — it damaged vehicles, it isolated communities, and it made every journey more difficult than it needed to be. That is changing now."

The rehabilitation contract covers approximately 12 kilometres of roadway, including resurfacing, drainage improvements, and the repair of several damaged retaining walls. Works are expected to be completed in phases over the next eight months.

Residents in Sandy Bay and Green Island, who have been among the most vocal advocates for the project, welcomed the news. "We have been waiting a long time for this," said one community member. "We are glad to finally see machines on the road."

The MP's office has set up a dedicated contact line for residents to report concerns or raise issues during the construction period. Updates will be posted regularly on this platform and through the constituency office.
